We are Massachusetts
We are Mass 50501, the local chapter of the national decentralized movement with a mission to preserve democracy, reform our institutions, and give voice to the voiceless. We want to restore our system of government by enlisting ordinary people who may never have been interested in activism before to help pressure leaders in government, industry, society, and media to stand up to the looming threat before us.
We are patriots. We know that word has acquired a negative connotation, but we love our country. We have a deep and abiding faith in the promise of America, in the value of democracy, in compassion and equality, and in working together to continually improve this country and its institutions. We have no political agenda beyond standing up to the current federal administration’s abuses of power and protecting our democratic institutions and all the people who live here, no matter their background or identity.
Our roots in Massachusetts have special significance: this state and its people changed the face of the world forever by having the courage to act when everyone else was afraid. Massachusetts was the cradle of the American Revolution, including when a radical protest group called the Sons of Liberty cast millions of dollars worth of British tea into Boston Harbor in protest of the tyranny of unjust taxation. With that single act, they defied an empire and helped create a new nation based upon ideals, not blood or privilege. While that new nation was far from perfect, it changed the course of history. Through the years, we the people of that nation have worked hard to correct the injustices of the past and unlock the promises of the American Dream for all its people.
In the coming months, we'll be working hard to build this movement. We'll provide a healthy, supportive, and resilient community to let you know that you are not alone! We might not know you personally, but we do know what you're feeling. This movement is a place for like-minded people to peacefully assemble, to amplify all of our voices by working together, to help our neighbors fully appreciate the danger that is coming, and to coordinate to stop it.
We'll also be sharing more about our strategy and intentions, and asking all of you to help us—up to your ability and comfort level. Everyone has something to contribute to the movement, and we welcome everyone who shares our goals and mission.
It's been only six weeks since we started this organization, and it's already required sacrifices—and it will require more before it's done. We know that we'll be maligned and attacked, but every challenge strengthens our resolve. As Roy T. Bennett said, “Do what is right, not what is easy nor what is popular.” We stand together, unwavering, because history demands the best of us in this moment and we will not falter.
Thank you for standing with us, both in body and in spirit. Together, we'll save these United States.
